OPBAT HANGAR GREAT INAGUA, BAHAMAS

Operation Bahamas, Turks and Caicos (OPBAT) is a combined US Coast Guard, DEA and Government of the Bahamas international drug interdiction effort focused on stopping the flow of drugs through the windward passage between Haiti and Cuba. The previous OPBAT hangar was destroyed by Hurricane Ike in 2008.

OPBAT HANGAR, GREAT INAGUA, BAHAMAS

BK joined a team that pursued the design-build assignment on Great Inagua, Bahamas, and was one of the first to spend time on the remote island about 40 miles from Cuba. The team was awarded the OPBAT Hangar, and BK became the onsite project manager and self-perform work superintendent. Most all materials and equipment had to come by dedicated ships out of South Florida. Achieving our government's quality control standards with limited local resources proved to be one of the many project challenges. The new hangar was built to withstand a CAT 5 hurricane, and achieved USGBC LEED Silver Certification. 

EDUCATION PROJECTS 

BK relocated from Ft. Lauderdale to Raleigh in 2002 and was the project manager on the 1208 bed NCSU Wolf Village student housing project. There were numerous Higher Education, Museum and Healthcare projects to follow in the North Carolina, Virgina and Florida markets. BK managed these assignments as a Project Executive, working for large contractors, utilizing both the hard bid and negotiated delivery methods. Responsibilities have included Preconstruction Services, Project Execution Planning, Contract Negotiations, Quality Control, Claims Avoidance, Operational Excellence and Profit & Loss.

Shipping Container Architecture   BK initiated the creative use of shipping containers as a pedestrian tunnel to solve safety and logistal concerns during the construction of 500 Glenwood. The City of Raleigh endorsed the approach and worked with other developers to adopt a similar strategy. BKGC continues to explore the innovative sustainable use of shipping containers as building elements. 

 

Maple Park Bell Tower   BKGC participated as a donor and builder/general contractor of the 40' tall ornate bell tower in a City of Dallas park. The monument was part of a revitalization effort in the area known as "Little Mexico".

 

Tammy Lynn Center for Developmental Disabilities   We have supported the TLC over the years, and BK led a volunteer team in the construction of an accessible playground. There were many local subcontractors donating materials and labor to this worthwhile cause.

Initially starting as a self-perform carpentry contractor on multi-family apartment and townhouse projects we expanded our capabilities aquiring an architectural millwork/furniture shop in Dallas, TX and began general contracting select commercial and high-end residential projects. The millwork and GC business moved to Pompano Beach, FL, and we quickly began work on numerous large waterfront homes and commercial projects. Quality control was key to comply with the rigid South Florida construction standards. Our millwork shop crafted unique cabinets, doors, moldings, built-ins, fixtures and custom home theatre furniture.
